Laurette Succar is a painter, visual artist and writer, living and working in Paris (France).
Born in Beyrouth (Lebanon), she studied Philosophy and Aesthetics at the Sorbonne University Paris and taught Philosophy in a High School in the Paris region.
She is the author of numerous collections of poetry, artist's books and object books.
Poetry and painting intertwine in singular works where the words are sculpted and the features are chanted. In the light of the throbbing theme of memory, her work continues to question the flaw, forgetting and the conditions of a possible transmission.
Her visual works - paintings, drawings and installations - are regularly exhibited in France and abroad. Her artist's books are found in the prestigious collection of Bibliothèque Nationale de France – Réserve des Livres rares.
Since its very beginnings, my artistic approach must be seen as an attempt to bring poetic writing and plastic art writing together.
The media, tools and supports used have systematically been diverted from their original function : by necessity to reappropriate materials whose different uses and multiple stories are no longer questioned.
For many years, the medium "spices" has been at the heart of my artistic concerns: it refers to my own cultural background and connects individual memory and collective memory.
My palette is composed of more than 25 spices treated with a particular technique that allows me to preserve the differences of colors, scents and texture.
Each kind of support I explore highlights a desired effect or consistency: brightness and transparency for the glass, density of the relief for the wood, volume for the stone, tension maintenance for the canvas stretched on the frame.
Finally, spices have a very strong symbolic charge: preciousness, exchanges, offerings, conviviality, cultural crossbreeding, nomadism mingle with the rituals of the oldest civilizations.
The invitation to travel has yet to be assumed and transmitted; the links between generations, peoples and cultures remain to be woven.
For this project ArtRoomsFairs Roma, I would like to propose a selection of paintings made with spices : curry, pepper, tandoori masala, coriander, turmeric, paprika etc . Sight, smell and sense of touch would be stimulated.
In the exhibition space, the intimity of a hotel room, visitors are invited to live an artistic and sensory experience. And to discover the last series of my artist's books.
